Business owners all over the world are somewhat being forced to turn to and embrace remote work options more than ever before in an effort to try and keep their businesses afloat due to the recent mandatory global lockdown that various governments have put into effect to try and combat the virus outbreak known as COVID-19 or the Coronavirus.
Some good news is that thanks to digital technology, most industries are able to carry on with business as usual and one thing we can all be thankful for is that this worldwide epidemic didn’t occur before the rise of digital technology and the internet, say 20 years ago. Things might have looked a lot different back then.
The idea of remote working is a fairly new emerging work style and may be new to some, so people who have operated and worked in more traditional environments, like in an office, might feel doubtful and maybe even fearful about remote work. This is completely understandable, especially from a business owner’s point of view. When you send your employees off to work remotely, you may have some concerns coupled with worrying thoughts and perhaps even question their integrity since you are not able to be there in person to monitor their performance.
But remote working isn’t going away anytime soon and with the working world continuing to evolve, embrace and favour flexible working styles, even before the Coronavirus outbreak, companies who have previously preferred and welcomed traditional ways of doing business need to begin to welcome remote working and look at it as a viable option to continue doing business as usual.
Mandatory lockdown and quarantine are likely going to last for weeks and perhaps even months in an effort to help stop the rapid spread of the Coronavirus epidemic, so it’s best to get comfortable with the idea of remote working, starting now.
Contrary to popular belief, working remotely isn’t as challenging as one might think. There are many tools available online to make the transition as smooth and easy as possible. Helpful tools such as Google Docs, Slack and Zoom will go a long way to assisting both business owners and employees in staying connected while working from home. Business remote communication can be easy and practical, even enjoyable, provided employees have the support they need to work with confidence and sufficient discipline. Zoom calls are an effective way to communicate within your organisation and serve as a crucial element when working from home. Business owners may even find that employees working from home are more content and productive because long commutes to and from work are no longer an issue.
Thinking ahead and hiring people in the future who can work remotely for your business means you can keep your business running and allows you the option to source talent from all over the world, meaning you are no longer confined to local availability as a business owner.
Remote working also allows for a certain amount of flexibility and aids in saving money, thus reducing both your and employee’s overall stress levels and allowing you and them to focus on important work.
With appropriate focus, commitment and co-operation from both business owners and employees, remote working has the potential for effective working environments and perhaps, more dedicated and engaged employees. This style of working may very well be the future of work.
